This week’s digest
AI in the news - weekly update
It’s been a busy week on the AI front. Elon Musk has gone 17 issues of Recruiter’s AI Digest without a mention, so I think it’s time he made his debut. ChatGPT has a serious new competitor and China has entered the AI regulation chat. And we have a bunch of useful AI x Recruiting resources to share as always.
Elon Musk announces xAI 🧠: Love him or hate him, Elon is never far from the limelight. This week, Elon Musk formally launched xAI, an artificial intelligence company aiming to challenge the dominance of Sam Altman’s OpenAI and “understand the true nature of the universe”. Only a couple of months ago Musk advocated for a 6 month pause on all AI activity. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but reportedly left in 2018 after clashes with management around their approach to AI safety. (FT article here)
Anthropic’s CLAUDE 2 released 🤖: ChatGPT has a new serious competitor in CLAUDE 2. Claude 2 can analyze roughly 75,000 words, about the length of “The Great Gatsby”, which is HUGE compared to ChatGPT’s roughly 4k word limit. CLAUDE 2 has been made ‘safer’ vs. the first version, and also has scored 76.5% in the Bar exam's multiple-choice section (GPT-3.5 achieved 50.3%), scoring very highly in math and coding exams also. China enters regulation chat 🇨🇳: China sees AI as an area in which it wants to rival the United States, and on which it has set its sights on becoming a world leader by 2030. On Thursday, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) published measures to manage its booming artificial intelligence industry, softening its tone from an earlier draft.

🎧 Podcast: Embracing AI in the Age of Talent (Jim Stroud)
In this pod, Jim Stroud chats to Metaview’s Siadhal Magos about topics on AI such as recruiter readiness for AI, training for HR professionals, and the redefined skills required for success. The episode also explores how AI affects the human aspects of recruiting, personal connections, and networking.
Some nuggets I took from this convo:
Are recruiters trained / ready for this?
It’s a spectrum. You can’t solely rely on answers from AI, and need to take accountability as a human for decisions, so training should focus on how to work with AI in this way.
Recruiting skills changing over time:
Recruiters will become more specialised in their skills, with more spending time on the relationship side of things, while others will specialize in the more strategic / planning, tooling decisions.

🧳 How AI is reshaping the rules of business (Venture Beat)
Here are some of the key themes that emerged from the first Generative AI Summit held by the World Economic Forum:
🔍 Audit AI responsibly to ensure fair hiring practices:
As AI models become more advanced, it's crucial to update requirements and standards for AI development and deployment. Auditing AI systems helps ensure fairness, transparency, and safety in the hiring process, avoiding biases and promoting equal opportunities for all candidates.
⚖️ Tackle bias challenges in AI candidate recommendations:
Traditional AI models could exhibit biases in recommending candidates based on race or gender, but new AI models like LLMs (large language models) present challenges in detecting and addressing biases. It's essential to explore innovative ways to ensure unbiased recommendations and enable auditing to mitigate potential biases and ensure fairness in decision-making.
⚡️ Upskill employees for the AI-driven job landscape:
AI is rapidly transforming the job market, and HR teams play a crucial role in supporting employees to upskill and adapt. With the increasing demand for new skills and the potential displacement of certain job roles, it's important to provide adequate training opportunities and empower employees to develop the capabilities needed to thrive in the evolving AI-driven work environment.
