This week’s digest
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, organized a private forum on Capitol Hill this week, at which tech titans gathered to discuss AI regulation with lawmakers. 🤖⚖️ The high-profile event included leaders like Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, and Mark Zuckerberg.
While perspectives differed, most agreed on the need to regulate AI thoughtfully. Musk warned of existential risks, while Pichai highlighted AI's benefits.
This meeting kicks off lawmakers' crash course on AI as they look to shape policy. Issues like job impacts, bias, and misinformation will likely come under scrutiny.

I saw Joel Lalgee share this one which I thought was funny 😅. Well if everyone’s talking about AI, you might as well be the most informed person in the room right?

How generative AI works (FT)
Still scratching your head about how AI like ChatGPT works? 🤔 This article offers an awesome explainer that makes it easy to understand:
Understanding the basics helps appreciate both the huge potential and current limitations. + IMO it’s just nice knowing a little bit about how the AI sausage gets made. 🌭

We must shape the AI tools that will in turn shape us (Reid Hoffman)
In this article, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman explores how AI could shape the future. He argues we should avoid dystopian or utopian extremes and instead focus on guiding it as a tool for humanity's benefit.
🏎 Speed: He argues we should speed up progress rather than slow it down. Just as past innovations like cars and the internet improved lives, advancing AI technology can help solve problems if guided positively. Worrying about traffic jams (negative case), and flying cars (utopia) wouldn’t have gotten us anywhere.
🛠 Innovation: Hoffman points to Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi as an example of pioneering new tools for the benefit of humanity. Brunelleschi invented equipment like mobile scaffolding to construct the epic dome on Florence's Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral. His innovative techniques advanced architecture and construction for generations. Hoffman advocates similarly crafting AI as a "cognitive scaffolding" to expand human potential if we steer it ethically.
Companies are hiring like crazy for Generative AI talent (@AznWeng)
This X thread from @AznWeng pulls out some super interesting data on Gen AI talent and hiring.
There’s been a steep increase in the number of companies mentioning “Generative AI” in job postings.
Big tech leads the pack with $AMZN way out in front, followed by $NVDA $MSFT and $GOOG among the top 10 along with tech dinosaurs $ORCL and $IBM. Outside of tech, big banks like Citigroup and CapitalOne also are hiring big in this area
Which public companies are paying the most for GenAI talent? Surprisingly, it’s not Big Tech in the top. CapitalOne, Pinterest and Snap are the top 3 with the highest average salaries mentioned in GenAI job postings (min. 3 jobs). Note: this is base salary, NOT total comp
What skills are required for these roles? Machine Learning and Data Science lead the pack. But they also need people that can manage the infrastructure required. Skills like MLOps and devops are important too.
