MIT Paper: AI’s Labor Market Impacts Are Slower Than Expected
(AI Supremacy)
In the insightful piece by Tobias Mark Jensen for "Futuristic Lawyer," a deep dive into a recent MIT working paper reveals crucial findings about the pace and cost-effectiveness of automating jobs with AI, specifically through computer vision.
Selective Task Automation: The MIT study reveals that only 23% of vision-based tasks are economically viable to automate now, indicating a more selective approach to automation than previously anticipated.
Economic Viability Over Capability: Beyond technical feasibility, the economic attractiveness of automating tasks is a critical factor, suggesting that not all technically automatable tasks are worth automating from a cost perspective.
Gradual Market Impact: Automation's impact on the job market is expected to unfold gradually, allowing time for adaptation and potentially less disruption than feared, with new job creation balancing out automation-induced job losses.
Sustained Demand for Human Labor: High development and customization costs for AI systems mean human labor retains an advantage in many sectors, highlighting ongoing opportunities for human-centric roles.
These findings suggest that while automation will continue to shape the job market, the transition may be slower and less disruptive than anticipated, with significant opportunities remaining for human workers. Recruiters should focus on adaptability and skills development in emerging technologies to navigate this evolving landscape effectively.

Former Instacart employee creates Instacart AI Interviewer
(Varun Khurana)
This former Instacart employee built an AI powered interviewer for a Business Ops role at Instacart. You can try it out here, and it will even give you a scorecard! (I failed on a few categories, although in my defence I quit the interview early)

EU’s AI Act passes last big hurdle on the way to adoption
(TechCrunch)
The European Union's AI Act has cleared a significant milestone towards adoption, with Member State representatives confirming the final text of the draft law.
EU's AI Act Progress: The AI Act has passed a crucial vote, moving closer to becoming law.
Scope and Regulation: It targets high-risk AI applications with strict rules, while exempting low-risk ones. (Think high risk as: tools that make decisions for you)
Unanimous Support: Despite initial opposition, all 27 EU ambassadors backed the final text.
Next Steps: The European Parliament is set to vote, but adoption appears likely.
Implementation Timeline: Once adopted, there's a phased approach to enforcement, with some rules applying after six months and others, including those on foundational models, not until 2025.
This development signals the EU's commitment to regulating AI technology, balancing innovation with ethical and safety considerations, a critical update for professionals navigating the evolving landscape of AI regulation.
